After separating from her partner, Carrie retreats from her "normal" life to spend a few
months in one of the tiny old cottages at her friend's large country estate whilst it is
closed from tourists for the winter. There, she is determined to lick her wounds after her
lost relationship and finish writing her current novel. Sitting in a chair by the fire, Carrie
finds links with the family who lived there over a hundred years ago. One family member
in particular struggles to share her story with Carrie through her fireside dreaming.
This is a stunning novel from Ann Torr, loosely based on her years of working at the
Elvaston Castle estate in Derby.
